The Boro stencil by Kristin Williams was inspired by her love of the texture, history, and utilitarian artistry of Boro stitching. A stitcher, herself, she finds beauty in the multitude of stitches and tattered cloth that preserved clothing through the years. The word "Boro" means “rags” or “tattered cloth” and refers to textiles that have been thoughtfully patched many times over and then passed on through generations.

This ancient art form results in a wonderful, textural creation of stitches upon stitches and cloth upon cloth to mend and repair garments. Generally involving patches and many “tiny stabs” of stitches, Japanese Boro cloth is a sought-after textile.

Use the entire stencil or just parts to create your own stitching patterns, or to make textured and patterned backgrounds for art journaling, mixed media artwork, handmade cards, and more.
